Lisa Chung
Lisa Chung joined the Office of Community Engagement in November 2021, to serve as our lead story-teller. As Director for Local Engagement and Outreach, she delves into Stanford’s work in the surrounding communities to chronicle the many -- and often little known -- ways that people are collaborating to work on solutions to our pressing problems. In addition, she helps connect community members with Stanford to further our university’s mission of service to benefit the region, nation and world.
Before coming to Stanford, Lisa was a senior field representative in the 13th Senate District of the California Legislature, acting as a liaison with the district’s nearly one million constituents in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. She had been an editor and a columnist for the San Jose Mercury News and later for the digital news sites, Los Altos Patch and Cupertino Patch. She specialized in several topic areas for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Hartford Courant in Connecticut. Additionally, she was Innovative Programs Director for the Center for the Integration and Improvement of Journalism at San Francisco State University. Lisa also has a background in non-profit administration, serving as executive director for the national Asian American Journalists Association. In that capacity she staffed the inaugural convention of UNITY, Journalists of Color.
Lisa continues to work to strengthen local journalism as a board member of the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, and as a member of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee for the Journalism & Women Symposium.
